FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDEPENDENCE MALL IS IRONIC SITE of NATIONAL "STEP IT UP" CAMPAIGN, APRIL 14
FOCUS ON COMBATING GLOBAL WARMING
With some irony, Independence Mall will host Philadelphia's "Step It Up" campaign rally and speakers programs on Saturday, April 14. The Philadelphia event is an extension of the nation-wide Step It Up Campaign
called by renowned environmentalist Bill McKibben and organized in
cyberspace by recent college graduates dedicated to addressing the
urgent need to combat global warming. Gatherings are at many of
America's most iconic place: the levees in New Orleans, the melting
glaciers on Mt Rainier, even the endangered coral reefs off Key West.
Independence Mall itself is at low elevation and at risk from rising
sea levels. Among the themes of the day is the need for
"independence" from foreign oil, hence the resonance if not irony of
the location.
Speakers include the Global Marshall Plan's Frithjof Finkbeiner from
Germany
and Mayoral candidates. Environmental groups, students, congregations
and performers will participate.
Every group across the nation will be saying the same thing: "Step It Up, Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050".
As people gather, pictures of the protests will be linked
electronically via the web -- before the weekend is out, this campaign
is anticipated to have the largest protest the country has ever seen,
if not in numbers then certainly in extent. Gatherings are planned in
each of our 50 States. Step it Up in Philly will gather from noon
to 2 pm at 6th and Market St, walking distance from SEPTA's Market East
station.
